Thomas Benrimo Description

Thomas Benrimo (1887-1958) was born in San Francisco and showed artistic talent from an early age. The Great San Francisco Earthquake of 1906 destroyed all of his early work. Not long after this devastating loss, Benrimo’s family was forced to move to New York City. The train ride across the country gave him his first glimpse of the Desert Southwest.

As a young man, Benrimo found work in New York as an art director for a theater company. The 1913 Armory Show inspired him to pursue painting in its own right. After a number of years in advertising, he moved to New Mexico in 1939, where he fell in love with the vast expanses and independent lifestyle of the Land of Enchantment.

“I work very much alone since I do not favor group action,” Benrimo said. “I am inclined toward individual goals.” He died in Taos in his early 70s.
