Paris L'Opera, 1964
Lithograph in colors
32.5 x 36.5 in
From the edition of 5000 printed by Mourlot. Signed in pencil "Marc Chagall 1977".
Marc Chagall (1887-1985) was controversially commissioned to paint a 560-square-meter mural on the ceiling of the Paris Opera in 1963. The artist divided the space into several color zones and wove together scenes and characters from the most beloved operas and ballets. This poster, produced by the Opera in 1964 to celebrate the project's unveiling, shows the portion of the ceiling devoted to Romeo and Juliet. The tragic lovers tangle in the air above the Paris skyline.
